Very normal, they don't last forever, I've changed out 4 or 5 over the years. Not sure if this is true or not but I was always told to never have your anode in contact with RV antifreeze as it kills them. I have never confirmed that as I always bypass my water heater and remove the anode when winterizing.

Are these rods expensive? Would it be a good idea to simply do it each year at the end of the season so it is ready to go the following season?

Anode rods are about $12 or so. Anodes are used up depending on where you camp. Every campground has a different quality of water.

Also, if you are experiencing sulfur smell in your hot water it is due to bacteria in the water reacting with the magnesium anode rod in the water heater. Switch it out with a zinc-aluminum anode rod to prevent the sulfur smell.
