I had the 8' ladder next to the travel trailer putting the cover on. I noticed that the trim cover strip had pulled away from its retaining screw at the top. Since the top of the strip gets the hottest in the sun, it is the weakest point when the strip starts shrinking from UV and age. You can see the hole on the end where it pulled itself off the screw. Trim had retracted about 1.5", so I cut off the bad end and dug the sealant out of the track and around the screw head. I was looking for something to fill the gap with. I had a couple of pieces of this direct burial telephone wire in the shop (dug up during a full depth reclamation process on our road). If I slit the outer jacket, and heated it with a candle, I could get it to lay relatively flat. Turns out, it was about as wide as the original strip. The small piece is the original strip with the pulled through hole. I worked the wire jacket into the track, overlapping the original strip by about 4". I did not use the screw to hold in place, but caulked the sides and end to hold in place. As the strip retracts now, it will slowly slid out. Hopefully it will last for years before it makes it out from under the additional piece.

Good job with the workaround.

Is the trim one continuous strip from end to end or was in a several pieces?

It is supposed to be one piece. The sun dries out the top of the strip. The bottom of the strip is somewhat protected from the sun. The top of the strip shrinks and pulls off the "anchor" screw. My screw cover strip was probably 4" short when I found it.
EDIT: December 2022. I checked the cover strip after our trip this week. It has pulled out another 1.5 inches since the 2020 repair.

One end of my trim was about 3 or 4" short.

One end of my trim was about 3 or 4" short. What does the top of the strip look like? On mine, at the top and bottom, it had the last trim screw run through the strip to supposedly hold it in place. Didn't work.
