I got my new license plate and went over to the storage lot to install it and realized there were no bolts on the mounting bracket so I have to go buy some I guess. However, I was inspecting the mount and it is tight to the body of the trailer. It is plastic so you can pull it out a little bit, but I am concerned that if I try to put a wrench behind it to be able to tighten a bolt into a nut it will snap off. Is there supposed to be some kind of compression fastener or some other magic I don't know about?

I found some rubber well nuts and screws. I haven't tried them yet but since the bracket is close to the body that the rubber would prevent it from scratching the side. I also picked up nylon bolts and nuts. Not sure which way I will go.

Why can't you push the screws through the back of the plate holder and put the nuts on the outside rather than behind the plate holder?

Google "clip nuts". Available at big box stores, probably in the specialty fasteners section.

Navylcdr, you can as long as you use hex head screws because there is no way to use a screwdriver on the back. We tried it wit nylon bolts and nuts, when tightening it down we snapped the nylon bolt. So for now we are using the rubber well nuts and screws. We tried the clip nuts but we couldn't get it pulled wide enough to get on the bracket. Our local hardware store had 1 size only.

I am still looking. The light is siliconed to the trailer so I can't take it off and then install the license plate. I tried reversing the nut and bolt and I couldn't tighten it as I couldn't stabilize the bolt. I just googled the clip nut, but the frame to clip it too is too thick and curved. I will try the rubber well nut next, But really, who's brilliant idea was it to engineer something that you can't actually use. The license plate is a pretty important item to the State and LE.

They let an intern, that rides a bicycle to work, design it. The rubber stamper, above him, doesn't know the component function. R&D doesn't deal with trivial off the shelf sub-assemblies. The machinist, making the injection mold, knew it wouldn't work, but nobody would listen to him. The installer, knew it wouldn't work, but didn't care. That's usually how it goes these days. It's up to the end user to figure out a work around, or replace it with an older design.
