Decided to do as "Thewolfgang" did, and added one shelf at the top of the closet both left and right. It will be good for whatever.

Nice job. What did you use to attache the shelve to the inside wall?

Earl, I added a ¾" x ¾" length of pine below the shelf on each side and used ½" ply as the shelf itself. I glued and used screws just long enough to pass through the paneling by another ¼" so I used 1 ⅛" screws. There will never be a great amount of weight on those shelves, perhaps clothing, or wallet, there is not enough room to put a lot of weight. So, I was not worried about putting anchors into the wall.

Nice work, spiderbobr! We’re looking for ideas to store a couple pair of shoes. Would you think this setup would hold a couple pair? (It does to me!)

Under my dining table bench sit storage area I have 12 clear plastic totes, each tote can hold 2 pairs of shoes, other tote has cables, manuals, table cloths, office supplies etc. The tote I have are the perfect fit the wooden bench cover rear on the totes just right to add a little extra support. Under the cushions my wife stores her table place mats and our US sticker Map.
