I’m looking at a transmission cooler for my 5th gen (2012) 4Runner. Towing capacity is 5K and my loaded Sonic Lite is a smidge over 4K. Safe margin, but even with putting the transmission in “manual” shifting mode and keeping it out of OD, the transmission temps are about 30-50 degrees higher than normal. So instead of seeing peaks of 160F w/o the trailer, I’m seeing 210F on a long incline while pulling. For the longevity of my transmission, I’m looking at adding an inline cooler to my stock system to bring those temps back down a bit. I’m looking at the B&M 70268, the Derale 13504 Series 8000, or the American Volt HD with a thermostat-controlled fan with (temp selectable) on/off temp sensor. The American Volt looks just like the Derale, but adds the fan for when you’re sitting in traffic and the tran fluid temp is staying high. On a couple earlier 3rd gen 4Runners I’ve owned, I have put B&M 70268 transmission coolers on them as preventative measures because the cooling section of the radiator is known to burst and mix with engine coolant causing the infamous “pink milkshake” that will ruin a transmission. So, not daunted by the installation, just looking for experience of others on selection. Any experience or guidance on transmission coolers? BTW, here’s a helpful chart for life of transmission fluid based on temp.

B&M 70266 what I settled with. Towing 5,700lb. trailer on flats at 65mph 4L60E in 3rd gear aprox. 2,600 rpm transmission temp stays 20 degrees below coolant temp. Flashes to 200 with 20mph head wind down shifting to 2nd revving to 4K. Aux cooler won't stop temp from getting to 200. It will cool fluid faster. Temp reading from computer is not fluid temperature, fluid temp is lower.

Jus ordered a Derale 13504. May add a pusher fan later.

Got the Derale installed today... So far, w/o the trailer I'm seeing peaks of 130F so it's looking pretty good. Will have the trailer out again in 2 weeks so will post an update then.

Took the TT on a more representative trip up to western VA this past weekend so hit a few decent inclines. Temps still went over 200 but not as high, and came down more quickly than before. So, pretty happy with the results.

I assume you're reading transmission temps with a bluetooth OBD2 reader. Which app are you running on your phone? I have tried Car Scanner and Torque Pro. Of the 5 transmission temperature methods, I have yet to find one that works with the 2017 Hyundai Tuscon, wife's car I'm playing with. I don't tow with it, the Expedition is for towing.
