On my car and truck the hatch or tailgate was hitting the front off the power jack. The car was the worse it would hit right on top of the power switches. I removed the 2 rubber plugs on both sides of the Motörhead. Removed 2 screws. I had to drill 2 more holes east and west and tap the drilled holes with 5/16" tap. The Motör head came off without unplugging the wiring. I put the MH back on turned 90 degrees and put the 2 screws back in covered with ribber plus. Took about 45 minutes. Now the tailgate and hatch both clear the Motörhead. Attachments:

This is an awesome idea. I can’t wait to go see if this will allow my tailgate to clear the motor head.
But I have to say that your post being autocorrected from “motor head” to the band Motörhead is really awesome too!

Could you just spin it 180 degrees & put it back on?
It's so frustrating. we have 2 dogs that ride in the back & when we are hooked up it's so tough to lift them over the tailgate to let them use the bathroom.

I have a propane tank behind my smart jack so I don't know if it would work or not. So the holes tru the jack head was like north and south. I had to drill holes east and west, some jacks already have the both holes depending on the brand of the smart jack. The best way to to drill holes is turn the smart jack head 90 degrees and then mark the new hole area either with a punch or a slight drill hole. I used a scribed and when I drilled the holes I was off center slightly so I had to make the holes a little bigger for the screws to pass thru. You have to use a tap and die set to make new threads for the holes you drill so you have to drill the holes slightly smaller than the bolts or get bigger bolts. The thread size has to match the original I think. The whole thing was about 30-45 minutes to do.

Earl,
I did this mod today & now I can open the tailgate while at the rest stop to let my dogs out.
Thank you so much!

I actually turned mine 180° as someone suggested because I didn’t want to drill two holes at 90°. It works perfectly for me and no interference with the propane tank.

Some of the jacks already have the 4 holes making it easy to just rotate 90 degrees and replace screws without drill new holes.
